The eight-day Spring Festival holiday in China has kicked off with impressive records in both travel volumes and box office revenues, continuing until February 17.
Tens of Millions of Railway Passenger Trips
China's railways witnessed nearly 12.93 million passenger trips on Tuesday, with an estimated 14.2 million expected on Wednesday, according to the China State Railway Group (CSRG), the nation's railway operator.
The CSRG's passenger department reported that daily ridership has consistently exceeded 10 million for two consecutive days. This surge is driven by various factors, including tourism, familial visits, and the return of people to their homes.
Passenger flows to major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen have significantly increased on Wednesday. These numbers have surpassed the peak passenger flows recorded before the Spring Festival, as indicated by presale tickets on China's official railway ticket-booking website, 12306.cn.
In terms of standby train ticket applications on 12306.cn, Guangzhou and Shenzhen emerged as the most popular destinations on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Harbin and Wuhan continued to be the top departure cities for the third consecutive day.
