China and U.S. Commerce Ministers Discuss Strengthening Economic Ties

In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen and U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago engaged in an in-depth and frank conversation on Tuesday via video conference. The discussion focused on key economic and trade issues of mutual interest and laid the groundwork for the upcoming first vice-ministerial meeting of the China-U.S. economic working group, as reported by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

Wang emphasized that China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation serves as a stabilizing force in the overall bilateral ties between the two nations. He expressed China’s commitment to collaborating with the U.S. to implement the important consensus achieved by the two heads of state during their summit meeting in San Francisco. Wang highlighted the role of the economic working group in expanding cooperation, managing differences, and creating favorable conditions for collaboration between business communities of both countries.

The discussion also addressed China’s concerns regarding certain U.S. policies. Wang voiced apprehensions over U.S. export controls on semiconductor and cloud services aimed at China, the perceived unfair treatment of Chinese companies operating in the U.S., and restrictive measures imposed on Chinese photovoltaic products.

Looking ahead, both parties expressed optimism about enhancing economic collaboration and navigating challenges to foster a more robust and cooperative economic relationship.
