Severe Floods in Maiduguri, Nigeria Claim 30 Lives and Displace 400,000

Severe flooding in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 30 lives and forced 400,000 residents from their homes, officials reported on Wednesday.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Ezekiel Manzo told AFP that the death toll has reached 30 following the overflow of a dam that swept away thousands of homes in Borno stateโ€™s capital city.

\"The situation in Maiduguri is quite frightening,\" said NEMA colleague Zubaida Umar, emphasizing the scale of the disaster.

The floodwaters have inundated approximately 40 percent of Maiduguri, leaving thousands displaced and struggling to find shelter.

\"From our statistics, we have 414,000 displaced people,\" Umar told the BBC's Hausa service, adding that officials fear the number could rise to one million.

The United Nations refugee agency in Nigeria described the flooding as the worst the city has experienced in three decades.
