Ethiopian Airlines Orders Nine New Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, bringing its total new Boeing jets to 20 after a December 2025 commitment for 11 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The latest deal signals a strategic push to meet rising long-haul travel demand and expand a network that already spans 145 international destinations. With one of the continent’s largest Dreamliner fleets, the Addis Ababa-based carrier will use its mix of 787-8 and 787-9 jets on routes linking Africa to Europe, Asia and North America, as well as key intra-African markets.

“This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew. He added that the airline plans more acquisitions under its strategic vision for sustainable aviation.

By investing in the 787-9’s advanced aerodynamics and fuel-saving engines, Ethiopian Airlines reinforces its sustainability goals while offering passengers a quieter cabin experience and spacious interior.

For young global citizens tracking innovation in emerging markets, entrepreneurs and business leaders eyeing aviation trends, sustainability advocates driving eco-friendly policies or digital nomads seeking new travel experiences, Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet expansion highlights how African carriers are driving global connectivity and championing sustainable aviation.
