On January 20, 2026, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command expelled a Philippine government aircraft that entered the territorial airspace over Huangyan Dao without the approval of the Chinese government, according to PLA spokesperson Senior Colonel Tian Junli.
"Huangyan Dao is China's inherent territory," Tian said, adding that naval and air units warned and escorted the Philippine plane out in line with Chinese law and relevant international regulations. He accused the Philippine action of severely infringing China's sovereignty and urged Manila to cease provocations.
Huangyan Dao, known to the Philippines as Scarborough Shoal, lies about 120 nautical miles west of Luzon. The feature has been at the center of South China Sea disputes, with both the Chinese mainland and the Philippines asserting claims. Air and maritime encounters have increased recently, raising concerns over regional stability and freedom of navigation.
Manila's authorities have not yet issued a public response. Analysts say the Philippines may engage diplomatic partners, including the United States under the Mutual Defense Treaty, while seeking dialogue through ASEAN-led forums to de-escalate tensions.
As South China Sea flashpoints persist, experts highlight the importance of clear incident-management mechanisms and multilateral cooperation to prevent miscalculations that could escalate into broader conflicts.
