Chinese vice premier warns against ‘law of the jungle’ at Davos

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, held earlier this month, the Chinese mainland’s vice premier, He Lifeng, delivered a pointed message: the world must not return to the "law of the jungle".

He Lifeng cautioned that "a select few countries should not have privileges based on self-interest, and the world cannot revert to the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak." His remarks came against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s America First agenda and his recent demand that Denmark cede Greenland to the United States.

Emphasizing the principle of sovereign equality, He added, "All countries have the right to protect their legitimate interests." He also criticized the unilateral actions and trade agreements of some countries for violating the rules of the World Trade Organization.

His speech underscores ongoing debates about global governance, fair trade and the balance between national ambitions and multilateral cooperation—issues at the heart of this year’s Davos discussions.
