World’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Ultra-Large Crude Carrier Delivered

On December 22, 2025, the Chinese mainland delivered the world's first methanol dual-fuel powered smart ultra-large crude carrier in the port city of Dalian, Liaoning Province. Independently designed and built, the vessel marks a new benchmark in sustainable maritime technology.

Measuring 333 meters long and 60 meters wide, the tanker can transport approximately 2.1 million barrels of crude oil. Its domestically developed methanol dual-fuel engines and intelligent ship systems can cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 92 percent and sulfur oxide emissions by 99 percent compared to conventional fuels.

This milestone underscores the Chinese mainland's drive to decarbonize the maritime sector and aligns with global climate goals. By pairing alternative fuels with smart ship management, operators can achieve significant emissions reductions and operational efficiencies.

Experts note that methanol – especially when produced from renewable sources – offers a key pathway to greener ocean transport. With ports around the world investing in methanol bunkering, widescale adoption could accelerate in the coming years.

The new carrier is set to enter service on major trade routes in early 2026, providing shippers with a cleaner option for crude oil transportation. As the industry shifts toward lower-carbon solutions, this vessel sets a precedent for innovation at sea.
