On Saturday, December 20, 2025, construction on the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge in Fujian Province, on the southeastern Chinese mainland, reached a major milestone. Engineers lifted the first steel box girder on the Xiamen section, marking significant progress in this ambitious cross-strait link.
Weighing 4,586 tonnes, the steel box girder measures 142.5 meters long, 44 meters wide, and 4.5 meters high. An intelligent monitoring system guided the six-hour lifting operation, ensuring real-time control and millimeter-level precision.
Once complete, the bridge will span the Taiwan Strait, connecting Xiamen with Kinmen in the Taiwan region. It's designed to:
- Enhance cross-strait ties by easing travel and trade
- Support a stable supply of water, electricity, and gas
- Boost local economies and raise living standards on both sides
As construction advances, the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge stands as a symbol of how modern engineering is transforming regional connectivity and economic integration.
