In a recent Leaders Talk session in Mogadishu, CMG's Li Peichun sat down with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to explore Somalia's ambitious roadmap for national reconstruction and its strategic partnership with China. As Somalia emerges from decades of conflict, this interview sheds light on the challenges, progress and future opportunities ahead.
Charting a New Path
Somalia currently hosts over 18 million people, with nearly 70% under the age of 30. President Mohamud emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, saying, "Our young people are the heartbeat of tomorrow's Somalia." This year, the government launched a development roadmap focusing on infrastructure, education and digital innovation. Key targets include:
- Rehabilitating major highways around Mogadishu to boost trade
- Expanding access to primary education for 1.2 million children
- Rolling out digital ID and mobile payment systems for inclusive growth
China's Enduring Support
Since Somalia's independence in 1960, China has been a consistent partner, contributing more than $200 million in development projects across the country. President Mohamud highlighted recent collaborations in port upgrades and healthcare facilities, noting, "Our partnership with China is built on mutual respect and shared aspirations for prosperity." China's Belt and Road Initiative has further connected Somalia to global trade routes, improving port efficiency and attracting new investors.
Looking Ahead
As Somalia strengthens security and governance, the President called for deeper China–Africa cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture and vocational training. "By leveraging technology and international partnerships, we can build a more stable and prosperous future," he stated. With ongoing support and a clear vision, Somalia's journey from conflict to resilience offers lessons for nations worldwide.
