UN: Gaza Famine Over, but Food Crisis Persists Amid Winter Challenges

Famine Declared Over, Crisis Persists

In August 2025 the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative (IPC) reported a famine in the Gaza Strip. Today, improved humanitarian access has lifted the famine classification, but the food situation remains dire.

Humanitarian Access and Challenges

Since the ceasefire on October 10, 2025, aid deliveries have increased but vary daily and are unevenly distributed across the Gaza Strip. Some neighborhoods still receive minimal support.

Winter Risks and Displacement

More than 70 percent of residents live in makeshift shelters vulnerable to winter floods and plummeting temperatures, raising the risk of hypothermia. The IPC estimates over 100,000 people are still facing catastrophic conditions.

Looking Ahead

Projections suggest the number of people in famine-like conditions could fall from over 100,000 to about 1,900 by April 2026. However, the entire Gaza Strip remains in an emergency phase, one step below famine, underscoring the need for sustained aid and stability.

As the ceasefire shows signs of strain, international coordination will be crucial to ensure Gaza’s food security recovery stays on track.
