The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) marked the 26th anniversary of their return to China with a solemn flag-raising ceremony at Golden Lotus Square on December 20, 2025. At 8 a.m., an honor guard escorted the Chinese national flag and the Macao SAR flag into the plaza, and as the military band performed the national anthem, both flags were raised slowly, fluttering in the winter breeze.
Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai joined Zheng Xinchong, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, senior SAR officials, and representatives from business, education and cultural sectors for the event. The gathering highlighted Macao's ongoing prosperity and stability under the One Country, Two Systems framework.
In an interview with China Media Group, Legislative Council member Song Pek Kei reflected on Macao's remarkable progress over the past 26 years. She noted that 2026 will usher in the 15th Five-Year Plan period, during which Macao will craft its Three-Five development plan. Aligning with national strategies, she said, will open new opportunities for innovation, tourism diversification and economic growth.
Song Pek Kei also urged young people in Macao to pursue personal ambitions while contributing to broader national development. 'Our youth are the driving force behind Macao's future,' she emphasized, highlighting their key role in sustaining the region's prosperity and supporting national goals.
For young resident Huang Tzu Tsai, the flag-raising ceremony was a powerful reminder of Macao's journey. 'Watching the two flags rise side by side fills me with pride,' he shared. Over 26 years, he added, Macao has benefited from the steadfast support of the motherland, laying the foundation for a vibrant, resilient society.
As Macao looks ahead to its next development phase, the focus on youth empowerment, strategic alignment and sustainable growth is set to shape the region's path under its unique status within the country.
