On Friday, December 19, the HKSAR Independent Committee tasked with investigating the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po convened its inaugural meeting to set work priorities and outline a detailed work plan.
The panel's Terms of Reference cover:
- Examining the causes and circumstances behind the fire and its rapid spread
- Assessing construction safety and issues related to building maintenance and renovation
- Reviewing systemic problems in the tendering process for large-scale maintenance and renovation projects
By midday on the same day, the Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court had reached 3.8 billion Hong Kong dollars (approximately US$488.34 million), aimed at supporting affected residents and families. As the committee advances its probe, its findings could drive enhanced safety standards and governance measures in densely populated urban settings.
