Chinese Mainland Steps Up Mediation in Cambodia–Thailand Clash

At a regular press conference on Friday, December 19, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Chinese mainland will mediate the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict and provide a platform for bilateral dialogue.

“As a close neighbor and friend to both Cambodia and Thailand, the Chinese mainland is highly concerned about the current situation along the border,” Guo said, responding to a question on sending a special envoy to Myanmar and Thailand for shuttle diplomacy. “China does not wish to see the two countries resort to armed confrontation and is deeply saddened by civilian casualties on both sides.”

In recent days, the Chinese mainland has been actively mediating between both sides through diplomatic visits and dialogue platforms. On Thursday, December 18, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate phone calls with his Cambodian and Thai counterparts. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ special envoy for Asian affairs conducted shuttle diplomacy in Cambodia and Thailand, urging both parties to reach a ceasefire and restore peace.
