On the morning of December 16, 2025, hundreds of Sydneysiders queued at a makeshift memorial on Bondi Beach to lay flowers for the victims of Sunday’s Hannukah festival mass shooting.
During the evening of December 15, two gunmen—a father and son—opened fire at the Jewish celebration. The attack claimed 16 lives, making it Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years. Among the deceased was one of the alleged attackers, aged 50, who was shot by police. His 24-year-old son remains in critical condition in hospital.
The flow of flowers along the boardwalk underscored a community’s grief and solidarity. In place of the festival’s songs and prayers, Bondi Beach this morning was filled with hushed voices and the quiet rustle of petals, as residents and visitors alike paid their respects.
As the city mourns, the memorial stands as a poignant reminder of loss and the enduring spirit of compassion.
