Hainan, an island province of the Chinese mainland, has been accelerating the opening up of its education sector as part of its broader ambition to become a global hub for goods, talent and innovation. In a recent discussion with CGTN's Chen Lanyou, Chiara Bruno, a German lecturer at the Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, highlighted why diverse international backgrounds are key to this vision.
Global Classrooms, Local Impact
Bruno, who relocated to Hainan earlier this year, has helped launch new bilingual programs that blend European teaching methods with regional expertise. Since the launch of the Hainan Free Trade Port policy in 2020, the province has introduced more than a dozen international degree courses across engineering, business and environmental science.
Enrollment of overseas students rose by 30 percent over the past year, with participants from Europe, Southeast Asia and beyond. Bruno notes that cross-cultural exchange enriches learning: "Students bring fresh perspectives that inspire local research and spur collaborative projects."
Talent Flow and Innovation
International lecturers and researchers have also fueled startup growth. Data from the Hainan Education Department shows that joint research partnerships increased by 40 percent in 2024, leading to innovative solutions in sustainable tourism and marine conservation.
"When talents from different backgrounds collaborate, they challenge assumptions and accelerate problem-solving," says Bruno. Her team is currently developing a digital platform for global classroom exchanges, expected to launch in early 2026.

Beyond the classroom, Hainan is enhancing support for educators and digital nomads through streamlined visa processes and affordable living options. These measures aim to retain skilled professionals and foster a vibrant academic community.
