China Denounces External Interference in Hong Kong Judiciary

On December 15, 2025, a spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) strongly denounced and firmly opposed what it called smearing remarks about the verdict in Jimmy Lai's case.

"Blatant interference in and slanders against Hong Kong's judiciary from Britain, Australia, the United States, Germany and the European Union, as well as certain politicians, are utterly unacceptable," the spokesperson said.

"Lai's case has nothing to do with press freedom. To attempt to whitewash the defendant or influence judicial proceedings through political pressure is to trample on the spirit of the rule of law," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson also criticized what it described as double standards, saying that some countries and politicians have long vilified the rule of law in Hong Kong under the pretexts of "human rights" and "freedom" to destabilize the region.

Affirming that the case is an internal matter of the HKSAR, the spokesperson urged relevant countries and politicians to respect China's sovereignty and cease interfering in Hong Kong affairs.
