Senegal Elected to Lead ECOWAS Commission for 2026-2030

In a historic move on December 14, 2025, Senegal has been elected to lead the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the 2026-2030 term. The decision came during the 68th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja, Nigeria.

It marks the first time Senegal will preside over ECOWAS’s executive arm, a milestone as the community celebrates its 50th anniversary since being established in 1975. With three members withdrawing in January 2025, membership now stands at 12, down from 15—a 20% drop that has reshaped regional dynamics.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed gratitude for the trust placed in Senegal and outlined a vision centered on peace, stability and deeper integration. “We will build on our collective strengths to ensure a prosperous and unified West Africa,” he said.

The president of the ECOWAS Commission plays a crucial role: implementing regional policies, coordinating development programs and representing the community on the international stage. He is also responsible for effective management of institutions and the responsible stewardship of financial resources.

As ECOWAS looks ahead to new challenges—from security threats to economic recovery—Senegal’s leadership will be under close watch by young entrepreneurs, thought leaders and travelers across the region. The coming term offers an opportunity to innovate, strengthen cross-border ties and pave the way for a more resilient West Africa.
