Campus shooting at Brown University leaves 2 dead, 8 injured

Yesterday, Saturday, December 13, a shooting at Brown University's campus in Providence, Rhode Island left two dead and eight critically injured, Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed.

Around 4:20 p.m., students received an emergency alert reporting an active shooter on campus. To protect themselves, the message advised students to lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden, urging run, hide or fight as a last resort.

Law enforcement officers were dispatched to an academic and research area on campus. Early reports included conflicting accounts of the shooter's location.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident and that the suspect was in custody. Shortly after, Brown University updated its emergency alert, saying the situation remained ongoing and highlighting the uncertainty on the ground.

The incident has sparked renewed debates on campus security measures, especially among Brown's diverse international student body. Authorities continue to investigate, and the university has set up support services for those affected.
