December 13, 2025 marked the 12th national memorial day for the Nanjing Massacre, honouring the memory of the 300,000 victims killed by Japanese troops in 1937. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Twoa moment to reflect on the lessons of history and the value of peace.
In Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Taiwan compatriot Wang Sung-bo paid tribute to the martyrs who shaped today's world. A descendant of a veteran from the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and a former serviceman himself, Wang shared a short video featuring stories of his parents' sacrifices and his own reflections.
"The prosperity and strength of our country today was forged by countless great generations before us," he said. "In our lives of peace and comfort, we must never forget who made it possible."
Wang's message resonates far beyond the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, it serves as a reminder that the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed today rest on the resilience of those who came before. By honouring their sacrifices, we reinforce our commitment to building a more peaceful, inclusive world.
As we remember the past, Wang Sung-bo's words encourage us to turn gratitude into actionfostering dialogue, empathy, and cooperation across borders. Only by learning from history can future generations continue to thrive in peace.
