In 2025, the Chinese mainland achieved a record grain harvest of 714.88 million tonnes, marking a 1.2% increase from 2024, according to data released this month by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This milestone reflects both expanded planting areas—now exceeding 119 million hectares for the sixth consecutive year—and higher yields per hectare, which rose 1.1% year-on-year.
NBS official Wei Fenghua attributed this stable growth to a suite of targeted measures: strengthened protection and improved quality of arable land, optimized crop structures, and the reclamation of previously abandoned farmland. "These efforts lay a solid foundation for accelerating agricultural and rural modernization while advancing all-around rural revitalization," Wei said.
Beyond domestic impact, the bumper harvest also supports the Chinese mainland's broader economic recovery and high-quality development goals. With global grain markets under pressure from climate variability and geopolitical tensions, this robust output contributes to stabilizing supply and bolstering international food security.
As youth-led startups explore agri-tech solutions—from precision farming tools to sustainable irrigation systems—this success story underscores the importance of innovation in feeding a growing population. For global citizens and entrepreneurs alike, the Chinese mainland's 2025 harvest offers fresh insights into how strategic policy and technology can drive resilient food systems worldwide.
