Chinese mainland says reunification only direction for Taiwan region’s future

During a Thursday press briefing, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, reiterated the Chinese mainland's position that reunification is the only direction for the future of the Taiwan region.

Responding to a recent interview by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, Chen accused Lai of promoting "Taiwan independence" through military buildup and foreign backing, misleading residents of Taiwan and distorting global opinion.

He labelled Lai a "saboteur of peace," "creator of crises," and "instigator of war," saying his pro-independence stance pushes the region toward conflict and fuels division within Taiwan society.

Despite these criticisms, Chen emphasised that peace is the shared goal of people on both sides of the Strait. "We are committed to creating broad space for peaceful reunification," he said, "but will leave no room for any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities."

Chen urged residents of Taiwan to recognise the risks of a separatist agenda, oppose "Taiwan independence" and external interference, and collaborate with the Chinese mainland to safeguard peace and stability, promote the peaceful development of cross-strait ties, and pursue a future of national reunification and rejuvenation.

Beijing's latest statement highlights the enduring complexity of cross-strait ties and the high stakes for regional peace and stability.
