On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) saw its domestically developed Jiutian large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) complete a successful maiden flight at a test site in Pucheng, Shaanxi Province, in northwest China.
Measuring 16.35 meters in length with a 25-meter wingspan, the Jiutian boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 16 tonnes and can carry up to 6,000 kilograms. With a flight endurance of up to 12 hours and a ferry range of 7,000 kilometers, the drone combines high operational ceilings, a wide speed range, and short takeoff and landing capabilities.
AVIC's modular payload design allows the Jiutian to switch between roles—from precise heavy-cargo deliveries to remote areas and emergency communications to disaster relief, geographic surveying, and resource mapping. Its flexible configuration positions it as a versatile platform in sectors ranging from logistics to environmental monitoring.
As global interest in heavy-lift UAVs grows, the Jiutian's debut underscores a trend toward more capable, mission-ready drones.
