They’re Family: Over 600 Pets Rescued After Wang Fuk Court Fire

They’re Family: A Race to Save Over 600 Pets

Earlier this week, a devastating fire ripped through Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong, claiming at least 160 lives and sending shockwaves through the community. As firefighters battled the blaze, another urgent mission was unfolding: rescuing the city’s beloved companion animals.

Animal welfare groups estimate that more than 600 pets—dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and more—were affected. Local shelters quickly became overwhelmed, prompting volunteers to convert community halls into temporary animal shelters and launch foster-care networks that span the region.

'Pets are family,' says volunteer Chan Yi, who spent two nights coordinating rescue teams. 'Seeing them reach safety after such a terrifying night was a relief.'

Veterinary teams set up pop-up clinics to treat injuries and smoke inhalation, while animal behaviourists worked to calm traumatized pets. Social media platforms buzzed with updates under #WangFukCourtPets, connecting volunteers, donors, and foster families—from Hong Kong residents to digital nomads abroad eager to help.

In just four days, hundreds of animals found temporary homes, and urgent medical care was provided to dozens suffering from burns and respiratory issues. Online fundraisers have raised critical funds for food, medicine, and boarding costs, demonstrating the power of community-driven support.

As Hong Kong mourns the human toll, the rescue of these pets has become a beacon of solidarity. In the face of tragedy, no family member—whether two-legged or four-legged—was left behind.
