New Hong Kong Legislature Ushers in Deeper Reforms and Community Recovery

The election of the eighth-term Legislative Council of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) concluded early on Monday, Dec 8, 2025, with results for all 90 seats announced.

This was the second LegCo election since the implementation of “patriots administering Hong Kong” and the improved electoral system, held less than two weeks after a deadly fire in a residential complex in Tai Po.

HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee said the on-schedule conclusion reflects Hong Kong’s continued respect for its constitutional order and the rule of law.

Candidates took part in 39 open election forums, engaging in what Lee described as high-quality, high-standard and healthy competition based on principles of broad representation, balanced participation and fair competition.

Lee expressed confidence that the new LegCo will work closely with the community and various sectors to better understand public opinion and lead the deepening reforms needed to build a shared future with the government.

Noting the challenges brought by the Tai Po fire, Lee called on LegCo members to join hands with the government on support and recovery efforts. He added, “Through initiating debates, promoting the review and updating of legislation, and driving systemic reforms, we will make Hong Kong a safer city where residents could live with greater peace of mind.”
