Chinese mainland’s 2026 New Year film season tops 3bn yuan box office

As of December 7, 2025, total box-office earnings for films released during the 2026 New Year film season (Nov 28–Dec 31) in the Chinese mainland have topped 3 billion yuan, according to online platform data.

Since November 28, the season has delivered an average daily gross of roughly 300 million yuan over its first 10 days. The historical drama “Gezhi Town,” which premiered on December 6, stood out with more than 100 million yuan on opening day and has now amassed over 180 million yuan, including presales and early screenings.

“Gezhi Town” revisits the story of civilian resistance against Japanese aggression, combining emotional storytelling with cinematic scale. Its early success reflects a growing appetite for locally produced narratives that resonate with domestic audiences and spark conversations on historical memory.

This box-office milestone underscores the Chinese mainland market’s resilience and the power of holiday-season releases to drive audience engagement. With three weeks still to run, analysts are watching whether upcoming titles can sustain this momentum.
