In a move to strengthen ties with the dynamic economies of the region, the International Monetary Fund launched its new Asia-Pacific Regional Center in Shanghai, China today.
Operations officially began on Monday, December 8, 2025, with IMF economist Johannes Wiegand appointed as director of the center.
As one of the IMF's global regional centers, the Shanghai hub will serve as a focal point for research and knowledge sharing, focusing on policies relevant to emerging market and middle-income countries.
According to the IMF: "It also aims at deepening dialogue and outreach with member countries, regional institutions and other stakeholders in the region."
The center will promote research and share knowledge through workshops, policy briefs and online events, making its insights accessible to a global audience of emerging-market innovators and policy-makers.
