China Urges Action on Palestinian Issue at UNGA

On December 5, during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Sun Lei, delivered a powerful appeal for the global community to address the root causes of the long-standing Palestinian issue.

Sun Lei emphasized that the Palestinian question lies at the heart of Middle East tensions and is inseparable from international fairness, justice and regional stability. "China firmly supports the Palestinian people's just cause to restore their legitimate national rights and has long provided humanitarian and development assistance to Palestine," he said.

The assembly voted on several resolutions covering operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), aid to refugees and support for the occupied Palestinian territories. Despite broad backing, the United States and Israel opposed the measures.

Highlighting urgent priorities, Sun Lei called for:

  • A comprehensive, lasting ceasefire in Gaza;
  • Immediate improvement of humanitarian conditions in the Strip;
  • Post-conflict governance and reconstruction, based on "the Palestinians governing Palestine".

He underscored the importance of a two-state solution and urged an early political settlement of the Palestinian question. By tackling historical injustices and underlying grievances, China argues, the international community can pave the way for durable peace and sustainable development in the region.

As the resolutions move into the implementation phase, observers will watch whether member states can translate calls for justice into concrete action—and whether the decades-old conflict can finally find a path toward lasting resolution.
