In a renewed push for peace this Thursday, President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner will meet Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, and Ukraine's lead negotiators in Miami, Florida.
The meeting comes two days after Witkoff and Kushner's attempt to promote a revised peace plan in Moscow fell short of a breakthrough. On Tuesday, Witkoff spent five hours with Russian President Vladimir Putin to outline U.S. proposals and gauge Russia's demands for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Yuri Ushakov, senior aide to Putin, told reporters at the Kremlin that "no compromise option has yet been found" following the U.S.-Russia meeting. "Some of the American proposals appear more or less acceptable. They do, nevertheless, require further discussion," Ushakov said, adding that certain wording "is not suitable for us."
Earlier on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X that his country's negotiators plan separate meetings with European and U.S. representatives. "Ukrainian representatives will brief their colleagues in Europe on what is known following yesterday's contacts by the American side in Moscow, and they will also discuss the European component of the necessary security architecture," Zelenskyy wrote.
Zelenskyy noted that the most sensitive issues in the peace talks concern territorial questions, frozen Russian assets and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
As these diplomacy efforts unfold, global eyes will be on whether this Miami meeting can unlock progress toward a lasting resolution.
