Putin Holds 4+ Hour Talks with US Envoy on Ukraine Peace

On December 2, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a marathon session at the Kremlin with U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner. The more than four-hour dialogue marked the latest high-stakes push to halt the deadliest European conflict since World War II.

Just before the talks, Putin warned European powers of a swift defeat if they pursued war with Russia, dismissing recent counter-proposals on Ukraine as “absolutely unacceptable.” His remarks underscored how far apart all sides remain even as diplomatic momentum builds.

This year has seen multiple attempts to bridge the divide. A leaked set of 28 U.S. draft proposals alarmed Kyiv and its European allies by seemingly conceding to Moscow’s demands on NATO, territorial control over a fifth of Ukraine and restrictions on Ukraine’s military. In response, European capitals tabled a counter-proposal, and talks in Geneva yielded an “updated and refined peace framework.”

Speaking from the White House during a cabinet meeting, President Trump said, “Our people are over in Russia right now to see if we can get it settled. Not an easy situation, let me tell you. What a mess.” He cited monthly casualties of 25,000 to 30,000, highlighting the human toll driving urgency for a breakthrough.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been reshaping the original plan to address Ukrainian and European concerns, emphasized that Witkoff’s mission is “laser-focused on ending the war.” His efforts aim to knit together competing proposals into a coherent roadmap acceptable to all parties.

For his part, Putin accused Europe of deliberately undermining peace efforts by pitching terms he said were designed to stall negotiations entirely. “They are on the side of war,” he said, insisting that Russia prefers dialogue but won’t hesitate to advance further if Kyiv refuses any agreement.

The stakes remain high. Beyond the immediate battlefield, this conflict has reshaped global alliances, spurred an energy crisis in Europe and tested the post–Cold War security order. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs and changemakers, the outcome will influence investment flows, tech collaborations and sustainable development programs across G20 nations.

As winter deepens, all eyes are on the next diplomatic move. Can this latest Kremlin dialogue become the basis for a broader settlement, or will the war’s devastating rhythms continue? One thing is clear: the world is watching.
