On Saturday evening, a family gathering in Stockton, northern California, turned tragic when a gunman opened fire at an ice cream shop during a child's birthday party. At least four people were killed and 10 others were injured, U.S. authorities confirmed.
The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. local time, and the victims included both juveniles and adults, San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Heather Brent said at a briefing.
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee described it as a “mass shooting” that happened inside the ice cream shop. No arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large.
“Early indications suggest this may be a targeted incident and investigators are exploring all possibilities,” the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue piecing together what led to this weekend's violence.
