Chinese Mainland Objects to U.S.-Taiwan Region Military Ties

On November 26, 2025, the Chinese mainland’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing’s firm opposition to official contacts and military ties between the United States and the Taiwan region.

Answering questions about the U.S. welcoming the Taiwan region’s $40 billion defense spending plan, Mao emphasized that the Chinese mainland "resolutely rejects such moves." She stressed that the Taiwan region’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities cannot achieve independence through military expansion and will fail to resist eventual reunification.

This exchange comes amid ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Earlier this year, the U.S. welcomed the Taiwan region’s defense plan, while leaders in the Taiwan region push to modernize their armed forces.

Analysts suggest that both sides are reinforcing their positions: the Chinese mainland underlines its stance against official contacts and military ties with the Taiwan region, and the Taiwan region frames its budget increase as essential for self-defense.

With key regional forums on the horizon, observers will watch how U.S. engagement and the Taiwan region’s defense strategy affect cross-strait stability.
