Iran Slams Israel after Beirut Strike Kills Hezbollah Military Chief

On Monday, Iran’s foreign ministry condemned Israel's targeted strike in Beirut that killed Haytham Ali Tabatabai, Hezbollah’s military chief.

"The assassination of the great commander is a cowardly act and a flagrant violation of the November 2024 ceasefire," the ministry said.

The attack marks the highest-ranking Hezbollah loss since last year's truce aimed at ending over a year of conflict. Tabatabai, relatively unknown among Lebanon's public until recently, was one of the new leaders chosen after the war.

Since the ceasefire, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes across Lebanon, citing threats to its security. Iran, Hezbollah’s key backer, has faced its own challenges: Israeli and US strikes damaged its nuclear sites during a 12-day confrontation earlier this year.

Analysts warn the Beirut strike risks derailing the fragile ceasefire and stoking tensions across the region. For global markets, renewed instability could pressure oil prices, while international observers call for restraint to prevent a wider escalation.

As activists and policymakers alike monitor the fallout, many young global citizens are taking to social media to call for dialogue and a return to negotiations that uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty and regional peace.
