China and Vietnam Elevate Honghe River Basin Cooperation

On Friday, November 21, 2025, the China–Vietnam Cooperation Week for the Honghe River Basin kicked off in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in the heart of the Chinese mainland’s Yunnan Province. The event aims to unlock practical avenues for coordinated regional development.

Representatives from government agencies, research institutions and enterprises along the China–Vietnam Economic Corridor gathered for discussions on cross-border cooperation, industrial synergy and people-to-people exchanges. Sessions highlighted strategies for sustainable trade, investment and cultural programs.

The 1,280-kilometer Honghe River, born in the Ailao Mountains and flowing into northern Vietnam, has sustained rice-growing civilizations for millennia. Today, it remains a vital link binding communities on both sides of the border.

Luo Ping, governor of Honghe Prefecture, described the region's "door-to-door, neighbor-to-neighbor" geography as a unique advantage that positions the prefecture at the forefront of local cooperation. "We are committed to building bridges that foster shared prosperity," Luo said.

Hoang Minh Son, consul general of Vietnam in Kunming, noted that the cooperation week provides a valuable platform for localities, institutions and enterprises to deepen exchanges and mutual learning. "We will work together on green economic development, digital transformation, water resource protection, climate response and cultural and ecological tourism," he said.

For young global citizens, entrepreneurs and travelers, the Honghe initiative offers a glimpse into how cross-border collaboration can drive innovation, sustainability and cultural exchange in today's interconnected world.
