Myanmar Reaffirms One-China Policy Amid Japan-Taiwan Row

On Friday, November 21, 2025, a spokesperson for Myanmar's State Administration Council, Zaw Min Tun, reaffirmed the government's unwavering support for the one-China policy. His statement came amid heightened tensions triggered by remarks on the Taiwan region made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

"The Myanmar government adheres to the one-China policy and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Chinese mainland," Zaw Min Tun said. He emphasized that acting President Min Aung Hlaing has repeatedly reiterated this stance during meetings with leaders from Beijing.

Myanmar and the Chinese mainland share a strategic cooperative partnership, Zaw Min Tun noted, describing the two nations as "good neighbors working together to build a community with a shared future." He added that Myanmar attaches great importance to nurturing and cherishing its ties with the Chinese mainland.

The spokesperson also highlighted Myanmar's commitment to the first principle of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which underscores mutual respect for sovereignty. "We will, as always, support the Chinese mainland's efforts to safeguard national unity," he said.

As regional dynamics evolve, Myanmar's clear endorsement of Beijing's core policy could influence diplomatic balances in Southeast Asia and beyond, reinforcing the capital Naypyidaw's tilt towards deeper engagement with the Chinese mainland.
