Global Mayors Gather in Nanjing to Chart Future of Waterfront Cities

A vibrant gathering of urban leaders kicked off on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province on the eastern Chinese mainland. The three-day Global Mayors Dialogue, themed "Flowing Rivers, Converging Future," brings together mayors and representatives from ten countries to share insights on sustainable development in waterfront cities.

Delegates from Brunei, Egypt, Germany, Malaysia and the Chinese mainland join peers from five other nations for in-depth discussions on cultural heritage protection, green ecological development and smart-city construction. Interactive sessions will tackle practical challenges and innovative solutions to create resilient, liveable urban spaces.

Field visits are a key highlight: participants will tour university campuses, explore scenic areas along the Yangtze River and walk the over 600-year-old Nanjing city wall. These excursions aim to showcase the eastern Chinese mainland’s approach to ecological protection, urban renewal and cultural preservation.

Gan Tian Loo, chairman of the working committee for the historic urban area of Malaysia’s Malacca, praised Nanjing’s blend of ancient wisdom and modern vibrancy. "Nanjing boasts a rich cultural heritage alongside a vibrant modern arts scene, making it a top destination for Malaysian youth," he said, adding that Malacca looks forward to deepening ties in tourism, trade and education.

Against a backdrop of accelerating urbanization and climate challenges, the dialogue offers a blueprint for cities worldwide to flow together toward a more sustainable, inclusive future.
