HKSAR Co-Hosts 15th National Games: Advantages & Challenges

As the 15th National Games unfold this November across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is co-hosting eight events, including fencing, golf, and beach volleyball, among others. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-Pui shares how the region’s strengths are shaping the Games and what hurdles lie ahead.

Rosanna Law highlights the deep-rooted collaboration that has grown between Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and Macao over years of cultural and economic partnerships. She notes that seamless transport links, world-class venues and shared heritage give HKSAR a strong foundation to host international-level competitions.

Key advantages for HKSAR include:

  • Integrated infrastructure: High-speed rail and cross-border tunnels connect host cities for smooth athlete and spectator travel.
  • Proven venues: Established golf courses and beachside arenas shorten preparation time.
  • Volunteer expertise: A robust local volunteer network trained this year ensures efficient event support.

Yet, hosting eight events also brings challenges:

  • Logistics coordination: Aligning schedules and regulations across jurisdictions requires constant communication.
  • Venue adaptation: Converting existing sites—like city golf courses—for large-scale competition tests local resources.
  • Health and safety: Maintaining pandemic-era protocols while welcoming international participants demands rigorous planning.

Looking ahead, Rosanna Law believes these challenges will strengthen HKSAR's sports tourism and regional identity. 'This co-hosting experience not only showcases our capabilities but also inspires the next generation of athletes and organizers,' she says.

For young global citizens and sports fans, HKSAR’s role in the 15th National Games offers a blueprint for cross-border collaboration in sport, culture and community. As the region embraces its advantages and rises to new challenges, the impact will resonate far beyond the medal tally, shaping the future of the Greater Bay Area.
