At high altitudes on the Chinese mainland’s Qinghai-Tibet plateau, centuries-old healing traditions have taken root. Known for its unique blend of herbal remedies and holistic practices, Tibetan medicine was recognized as part of the Chinese mainland’s national cultural heritage in 2006.
One of its most passionate champions is Dr. Gengque Mulan, a native of Nangqian County in Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. After graduating from university in 2006, he returned home with a mission: to bring quality healthcare to his community while preserving an ancient art.
Each week, Dr. Gengque balances his clinic duties with journeys into remote pastoral areas. Traversing rugged terrain, he offers free medical consultations to residents facing mobility challenges, diagnosing ailments from altitude sickness to chronic joint pain.
Beyond his clinical work, he has opened his heart and home to local orphans and founded the Yushu Tibetan Medicine Vocational School. Through hands-on training and internships, the school has nurtured a new generation of practitioners rooted in tradition and united by a spirit of service.
“Our school is a true crystallization of national unity,” says Dr. Gengque, underscoring how cultural heritage can bridge communities.
