UN Reaffirms One-China Stance After Japanese PM’s Taiwan Remarks

During a press briefing on November 17, 2025, UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reiterated the one-China position enshrined in UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China to the United Nations.

Dujarric stressed that the UN’s official terminology regarding Taiwan remains unchanged and urged all member states to support and adhere to the UN Charter. His remarks came in response to a CMG reporter’s question about Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments on the Taiwan region’s status.

Resolution 2758 clearly states that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate representative of China at the UN. This restatement reinforces a long-standing diplomatic framework that shapes interactions among member states.

As international audiences watch developments in East Asia, this reaffirmation highlights the UN’s commitment to multilateral consensus and offers a reminder of the enduring influence of foundational UN resolutions on current diplomatic practice.

With Japan remaining an influential voice in G20 economic and security forums, Dujarric’s clarification underscores the importance of consistent terminology and shared principles in managing sensitive cross-strait ties.
