On Tuesday at the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), leaders came together against a backdrop of shifting geopolitical dynamics and rising calls for a fairer global order.
Rejecting Unilateral Measures
Member states issued a joint communique rejecting any unilateral or coercive actions—especially economic measures—that violate the UN Charter or hinder international cooperation. They argued such steps deepen divisions and derail efforts to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Strengthening Global Trade & Finance
The communique affirmed a firm commitment to an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system. Delegation heads called for reforms to global financial governance, urging greater inclusion of developing countries in key institutions and more equitable decision-making.
Guaranteeing Energy Security
Recognizing energy as a linchpin of stability, SCO members pledged to build a diversified energy mix—balancing fossil fuels, renewables, hydropower and hydrogen. They also backed peaceful nuclear cooperation to ensure a reliable flow of energy and safeguard market stability.
Backing UN Reforms
To reflect today’s political and economic realities, the communique stressed the necessity of United Nations reforms that boost representation of developing nations. It emphasized that SCO cooperation can help forge an inclusive Eurasian security framework and foster new international relations based on mutual respect and win-win collaboration.
As global economic fragmentation intensifies, the discussions in [this week’s summit] underscore the SCO’s goal: driving equal, mutually beneficial cooperation across trade, finance, energy and security.
