On Monday, November 17, 2025, at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil, the China Pavilion hosted a vibrant side event titled Building Beautiful Green and Low-Carbon Cities Together. Co-hosted by CGTN of China Media Group, the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment's Center for Environmental Education and Communications, and international partners, the gathering brought together more than 100 participants from government, academia, business, international organisations and the media.
Li Gao, vice minister of the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment, underscored that over 70 percent of global carbon emissions originate from urban areas. He noted that the transition to low-carbon cities is key to addressing climate change and essential for improving quality of life and driving high-quality development. Li expressed hope that the event will spark deeper exchanges and broader cooperation, helping to build livable, resilient green cities worldwide and injecting fresh momentum into global climate governance.
Zhu Boying, head of CMG's Latin America bureau, highlighted CGTN's role in shaping perceptions through storytelling and visual reporting. He emphasized that by showcasing a real and vibrant China, CGTN aims to galvanise collective climate action, strengthen ecological cooperation and offer new insights for cities pursuing sustainable growth.
Michael Adalla, senior programme officer at UNITAR's Division for Prosperity, praised the Chinese mainland's innovations in green transition and rapid urbanisation. He pointed out that the joint efforts of government and residents offer valuable lessons for global economic recovery and green transformation. Adalla said UNITAR will continue collaborating with the Chinese mainland to advance net-zero urban transitions, cultivate green talent and support international partnerships.
The COP30 side event highlighted the power of collaboration and innovation in accelerating urban green transitions. As cities worldwide seek pathways to sustainability, the insights and partnerships forged here could light the way toward a greener, more resilient future.
