China Rejects Japan’s Protest Over Coast Guard Patrol Near Diaoyu Dao

Beijing has dismissed Tokyo’s objections to recent patrols by the China Coast Guard around the Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands, reaffirming that these waters fall within China’s inherent territory.

At a daily press briefing on November 18, spokesperson Mao Ning responded to reports that on November 16 four China Coast Guard vessels entered the waters surrounding the Diaoyu Dao. Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Minoru Kihara, had lodged stern protests via diplomatic channels over what Tokyo described as an 'unauthorized patrol.'

Mao said the CCG’s law enforcement patrols in China’s territorial waters are both justified and legitimate. She urged the Japanese side to respect China’s territorial sovereignty, refrain from obstructing the patrols and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

Located in the East China Sea, the Diaoyu Dao has long been a flashpoint in Sino-Japanese relations. This latest standoff highlights growing maritime security concerns that could affect shipping routes, regional stability and the wider business climate across Asia.

As tensions simmer, the need for dialogue to manage disputes peacefully remains critical. Stability in the East China Sea is essential not only for the neighbors directly involved but also for global trade and travel connecting diverse regions and markets.
