Japanese Film Releases Delayed in Chinese Mainland Over Audience Sentiment

In a strategic move driven by market dynamics and audience sentiment, distributors in the Chinese mainland have delayed the release of several high-profile Japanese films, including Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot, The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers, and Cells at Work. China Media Group (CMG) reported that this decision follows a review of Japanese film performance and recent audience reactions.

Earlier this month, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 6 The Movie: Infinite Castle 6 Part 1: Akaza Returns opened strongly in the Chinese mainland, fueled by its loyal fanbase. However, after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made controversial comments, the films box office revenue dipped sharply just three days after release, underscoring the delicate balance between pop culture and geopolitics.

As of November 16, total film revenue in the Chinese mainland has reached 45.543 billion yuan (about $6.4 billion) in 2025, solidifying its status as the worlds second-largest market. Domestic titles accounted for 40.298 billion yuan (around $5.7 billion), representing 88.48 percent of the total. This marks the third time in history that domestic box office earnings have surpassed the 40-billion-yuan milestone.

Industry observers note that audience sentiment is playing an increasingly influential role in release strategies across global markets.
