Swimming Dominance on Day 4: Zhang Zhanshuo Clinches 1500m Freestyle Gold

Earlier this week, on Day 4 of the Chinese mainland’s 15th National Games in Shenzhen, swimmers vied for six gold medals across the pool’s marquee freestyle events. Leading the pack was 18-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo from Shandong, who clinched the men’s 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 14 minutes 52.73 seconds.

Starting from lane four, Zhang locked horns with Zhejiang’s Fei Liwei in lane five, the pair exchanging leads through the first 1000 meters in a duel of endurance and tactical pacing. In the closing laps, Zhang surged ahead, touching the wall first to secure his fourth individual freestyle title of these Games—adding to golds in the 200, 400, and 800 meters.

Fei Liwei took silver, while Shaanxi’s Li Chengyu claimed bronze in a tightly contested final. Zhang’s dominance underscores his rising status among the Chinese mainland’s swimming elite and highlights Shenzhen’s seamless hosting of top-tier aquatic competitions this year.

With six gold medals awarded on the fourth day in the pool, the National Games continue to deliver thrilling performances and set the stage for more high-stakes races as the competition moves forward.
