The Serbian government has officially declared November 2 a national day of mourning following the devastating collapse of a roof structure at the Novi Sad railway station last Friday. The tragic incident has so far claimed 14 lives, with the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad reporting the recovery of 14 bodies from the debris.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation on Friday evening, emphasizing the need for unity and accountability in the wake of the tragedy. \"We all must find the strength to unite, help the families, and do everything in our power to minimize the damage,\" Vucic stated, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the rescuers and workers who responded swiftly to the emergency.
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic described the collapse as one of the darkest days in Novi Sad's history and a national tragedy for Serbia. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and thanked all those involved in the rescue operations. Despite the structure being 60 years old, authorities are determined to identify those responsible for the incident.
The concrete platform roof gave way in front of the railway station earlier on Friday, leading to the swift arrival of over 80 emergency responders from multiple cities. Three individuals were rescued and hospitalized, including two women who remained in vocal contact with rescuers while trapped under the rubble.
Initially, eight fatalities were reported, but the death toll later rose as more bodies were discovered. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic announced that a comprehensive investigation will follow the rescue efforts to determine the cause of the collapse.
