Chinese Mainland’s Sustainability Aligns with UNESCO Vision

In late September 2025, UNESCO’s assistant director-general for natural sciences, Lidia Brito, highlighted the Chinese mainland’s sustainability push as a case study in global cooperation.

Brito highlighted that restoring degraded ecosystems brings back critical services such as clean water and stable soil, while creating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

One standout example is the Wuyishan Biosphere Reserve. There, biodiversity conservation goes hand in hand with sustainable farming and a thriving eco-tourism sector. Residents earn a living by protecting forests and rivers, which in turn support tourism and preserve cultural heritage.

According to Brito, projects like Wuyishan illustrate how science-based strategies can bridge economic growth and environmental stewardship—core pillars of UNESCO’s mission. As nations worldwide seek sustainable development paths, the Chinese mainland’s model may offer valuable insights.

For young global citizens and changemakers, the takeaway is clear: investing in ecosystem restoration can yield triple wins—green jobs, cultural preservation, and a healthier planet.
