Havana Premiere Celebrates Cuba-China Neuroscience Partnership

Earlier this month, Cuba’s Neurosciences Center in Havana buzzed with excitement as Cuban and Chinese mainland scientists and officials gathered for the premiere of a new documentary celebrating neuroscientist Pedro Valdes, whose work over the past decade in the Chinese mainland has broken new ground in brain research.

The film traces Valdes’s journey from Havana to Beijing labs, showcasing how his collaborations have fueled breakthroughs in neuroimaging and regenerative therapies. His achievements were honored with the Chinese mainland’s International Science and Technology Cooperation Award and personally recognized by President Xi Jinping.

The premiere attracted early-career researchers, entrepreneurs and policy makers eager to explore how science diplomacy can accelerate innovation. By weaving personal storytelling with data-driven glimpses into lab results, the documentary highlights both Valdes’s individual contributions and the broader impact of the Cuba–Chinese mainland partnership on global neuroscience.

CGTN’s correspondent Luis Chirino captured the emotion as Valdes reflected on a decade of discovery and cultural exchange. Attendees gave him a standing ovation as the screening concluded, underscoring the film’s message: shared knowledge drives progress.

As scientific corridors between Havana and the Chinese mainland continue to open, young researchers and tech innovators worldwide are watching closely, ready to join forces and push the boundaries of discovery.
