COP30 Kicks Off in Belém – First UN Climate Summit in the Amazon

COP30, the 30th UN climate summit, opened today in Belém, Brazil, marking the first time the talks are held in the Amazon region.

Delegates from over 190 countries and regions are gathering this week to tackle deforestation, carbon markets and climate finance. Organizers hope the Amazon's unique ecosystem will keep the spotlight on preserving vital forests that store an estimated 200 billion tons of carbon.

Indigenous voices are central to COP30's agenda. Leaders of local communities will lead side events, sharing insights on traditional land stewardship and biodiversity conservation. Brazil's environment minister, Marina Silva, highlighted the need for equitable finance and respect for indigenous rights to ensure lasting solutions.

In addition to negotiations, a Green Innovation Forum will showcase startups and tech solutions for real-time forest monitoring, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy. Over the next two weeks, negotiators will aim for a strong declaration on halting deforestation by 2030 and unlocking $100 billion in climate finance for developing regions.

Global citizens can follow key announcements and livestream sessions online. As the summit unfolds, COP30 in the Amazon could set a new benchmark for inclusive, place-based climate action.
