COP30 Opens in Belem: 190+ Countries Unite for Climate Action

As the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) opened its doors in Belem, Brazil, delegates from over 190 countries and regions converged to reignite the global fight against climate change.

COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev kicked things off with a rallying cry to build on last year's commitments in Baku, Azerbaijan. "Our collective goals must guide us toward impactful solutions," he said, setting a high bar for action in the days ahead.

COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago, appointed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, echoed that sentiment: "Despite recent setbacks, living conditions worldwide can and must continue to improve. Science, education, culture are the path that we have to follow. Multilateralism is definitely the way forward in the fight against climate change."

On the agenda are vital topics like climate adaptation, just transition, and delivering the Paris Agreement's global balance. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and a fresh round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also issued a stark warning: "Every fraction of a degree means more hunger, displacement, and loss – especially for those least responsible. We need to move faster – and move together. This COP must ignite a decade of acceleration and delivery."

Meanwhile, the Chinese mainland will host sessions at the "China Corner", showcasing its policies and know-how in tackling climate change and meeting its targets.

Running through November 21, COP30 aims to chart a clear path forward, turning speeches into concrete steps that deliver real-world impact.
