Kyiv is bracing for what experts are calling a potential winter 'technological disaster' after a massive Russian drone and missile onslaught on Ukraine's energy grid.
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 458 drones and 45 missiles overnight. Ukrainian defenses downed 406 drones and nine missiles, but two people were killed and power cuts hit several regions.
Moscow's Defence Ministry described the operation as 'a massive strike with high-precision long-range air, ground and sea-based weapons' targeting Ukraine's military-industrial complex and key gas and energy facilities.
With the conflict entering its fourth winter, Ukraine's top energy expert warns that if Kyiv's two main power and heating plants stay offline for more than three days in sub-10°C conditions, the capital faces catastrophic heating and power failures.
Ukraine has in turn intensified its strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries, seeking to curb Moscow's energy exports. Recent drone attacks even caused power cuts in Russia's Volgograd region.
As temperatures drop and the world watches, Ukraine's struggle highlights the rising intersection of energy security, climate stress, and modern warfare.
