Georgia’s PM Kobakhidze on Tapping China Ties at Shanghai’s CIIE

At the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai in the Chinese mainland, Georgia stepped onto the world stage as Guest Country of Honor. For a nation known for its strategic crossroads between Europe and Asia, this debut marks a fresh chapter in China–Georgia cooperation.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze sat down with CMG’s Zou Yun to unpack how Georgia plans to leverage China’s high-level opening-up. “We see enormous potential in trade, tech partnerships and cultural exchange,” Kobakhidze explained, pointing to growing demand for Georgian wine, tourism and digital innovation in Chinese markets.

On China’s path to modernization, Kobakhidze praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative as “forward-looking,” adding that China has emerged not only as a model of rapid transformation but also as a champion of peace. He underscored the importance of stable global governance, noting that both countries share a vision of inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Looking ahead, the prime minister highlighted deeper ties under the Belt and Road Initiative. From expanding transport corridors to co-developing smart-city projects in Batumi and Shanghai, Georgia aims to be a bridge for entrepreneurs, students and changemakers on both sides. “Our strategic partnership is built on mutual respect and concrete results,” he said.

As the expo wraps up, Georgia’s leadership is already forging new agreements in logistics, renewable energy and tourism experiences. For young global citizens, business innovators and digital nomads alike, Georgia’s story at the CIIE offers a vivid example of how small nations can harness big-picture partnerships for real-world impact.
